Comic Con 2013 Review
My Comic Con 2013 Experience
If there was any kind of a pilgrimage of sorts for all comic book, television, film and sci-fi enthusiasts, it would have to be Comic Con.
This event, now in its seventh year in New York City, draws in people by the thousands. As chilly as it may be on the outside, the heat of human bodies packed into the Jacob Javits Center in the West Side Midtown more than makes up for it. I for one am not keen on big crowds but the one thing that holds my attention on those long lines is the biggest attraction; The costumes.
Yes. I said it. Costumes. Granted we’re in October and Halloween is right around the corner. Yet The New York Comic Con grabs the greatness of the holiday and takes it to the people. Imagine dressing up as your favorite super hero, villain, spirit, demon, killer, Jedi, Sith, even video game character. The Comic Con had it. It was awesome as I brought myself and my family on Sunday’s Kid’s day. My oldest daughter was Wonder Woman, My youngest Captain Amerigirl, my lovely Sandee was Batgirl, and of course I had to stick out as a Jedi Knight showing of my force FX lightsabers. The Artist Alley in the Comic Con was filled with amazing paintings, drawings and sketches of all kinds of fictional characters, not to mention the real life size R2 Unit!
What brings about such buzz to such an event? It’s clear that conventions like this, small and large, hold a deep importance to myself and others who attend. As a Star Wars Geek and a Horror film fan I must say that what pulls me into events like this is the boy in me. As a boy I imagined, and I imagined big. I was Darth Vader for 3 straight Halloweens in a row before I gave it up as I entered High School. I used stripped fishing rods I found in the garbage around my grandmother’s block and pretended it was a lightsaber. I was a Jedi. I remember finding a thrown away umbrella, taking apart the small metal rods that made up the web of the umbrella. I took seven of them and pretended I was one of the monks in The Final Conflict carrying the seven daggers of Megiddo to kill the Antichrist. I remember hiding in my grandmother’s building stalking calmly my friends as they ran away from….Michael Myers! Yep, I pretended to be him too.
That’s the kind of imagination that runs wild at Comic Con. You get to be your favorites and what I like best of all is the attention you get. Many people came up to me asking for pictures of myself and my family. For a little while there, you feel like you’re on the red carpet. For just a little while, you are famous. If you love to be a kid again, like I tend to be from time to time, and you are into comic books, sci fi and horror movies, television shows….even pro wrestling… make sure you get your tickets early for next year’s Comic Con. That way you can dress up and be famous…
Just for a little while….
